Amazing and Unique Idea To Make Money with Your Sewing And Art Skills

High Demand Arts and Crafts Skill proven to be a real potential money maker!
Make Money With Your Art Designing Softies

I came across a really fun craft idea on Pinterest today.
The image showed a child's drawing converted into a fun stuffed animal or more accurately a "softie"
You can see it below.

The caption stated that, if you send a kids drawing to this sites service, they would (for a fee) send you an original child's toy created from the drawing.

Since, I am always on the lookout for methods to make money from my art or ideas to share on this site and related projects, I went in for further examination.

The other "softies" were amazing! These things don't compare to grandma's sock monkeys, she has a real talent for soft sculpture and making 2d images appear in the real. I'm reminded of Joan Miro's transition from 2d work to full scale theater.

That is awesome right! If you are unfamiliar with Miro, here is

Figure at Night Guided by the Phosphorescent Tracks of Snails 1940

I would really give this Artist who makes these softies the credit for being great in soft sculpture and knowledge of materials. I wouldn't call these "children's toys"

But, not surprisingly when I was reviewing her site, I saw this notice:

My site has gone viral; people say that I’m on Pinterest; people are blogging about me. But  now I don’t know how long people will have to wait before I get to their order.  The 4-6 week turnaround time has just gone out the window.
So, here’s an idea.  Let’s keep Child’s Own Studio a secret for a while?   Don’t share this website with your friends, pin me on Pinterest, post about me on facebook or blog about me.   Yes, shhhhhhh….until I catch up.
Now, that's got to be a great feeling, to be so overwhelmed with commissions that she has to post that notice!

So, although, I am "blogging" about her Art, I am also reposting her "dont share me" post, so I hope they cancel each other out.

So as this site is mostly about how to market your art and how to utilize your creativity to earn money, I dug in deeper ...

If you click the link below, you can see just how popular this site has been on Pinterest.

http://pinterest.com/source/childsown.wordpress.com/

People really love these, rightfully so, as this Artist is very skilled at it, but are you capable of something similar? I expect many think they are and few actually are, but the market appears to be quite open.

She sells these in the range of $70-150 USD and has more demand than she can handle, maybe you want to join up with her , utilize her great presence or buzz, or maybe be inspired to start your own variation on the concept?

Personally, I think she is far underpricing her Art!

So how about, can you think of your own variations on this concept? Brainstorm in the comments below!

Ingenuity in Art: Successful traditions in painted Screens

Artist's by their nature are creative people. But when it comes to the business of art or creating an income from art many are rather traditional and quite uncreative.

This site is full of creative ideas on how and what to market in order to support yourself as an artist.

One great idea, that proved successful for the innovator is the Painted screen.

Almost every house has them, boring drab normal looking screens, with a little effort as an artist you can dress up your own home, create great gifts or even start your own screen painting business!

Make Money by Saving Money on your Art Supplies

Good business owners know that the best way to keep your profits high is to keep your costs down. Art supplies are costly! Particularly if you shop at your local art shop, although in theory I prefer to support my local economy and stores, my expreinces with cut throat cost at most art stores including Hyatt's in Buffalo, Ny and my local college bookstore, I really had to find wiser and more affordable venues. The following article has some very useful information. I would add that if you are near a college or university, you could create flyers stating that you will by their unused art supplies, many students take an art appreciation course beacuse they have to buy $200 in Art supplies, and barely use any of it and never get any future utility, they are always quick to sell at bargain prices. I know this from experience.>

Six Ways to Save Money on Art Supplies

Six Ways to Save Money on Art Supplies
By Jamie Jefferson

With the economy in the shape that it is, everyone is looking for ways to save money on things they need. If you're an artist, you need to know how to pay as little as possible for your art supplies, especially when money is tight. Here are six quick tips for finding art supplies at a discount.

1. Buy in bulk. One of the easiest ways to save money on art supplies is to buy in bulk whenever you can. Artist supply companies may give you a price break (sometimes as large as 30 percent) if you buy in large quantities. You may have to do some searching and asking around to get the best deal. Once you have established yourself as a repeat customer, the supply company may be more inclined to offer that discount.

2. Shop auction sites. Look for your favorite art supplies on auction sites such as Yahoo Auctions, eBay, or WeBidz, where you may able to find brand new art supplies for much less than retail prices. Some sellers may even have them listed well below wholesale.

3. Buy local. Check out local art supply or crafts stores, which generally have sales throughout the year, especially when new items are being added. Pay attention to unadvertised, in-store sales. If the store has a mailing list, make sure to sign up because the merchant will often announce special sales to newsletter recipients. If the store has a website, make sure to sign up for online newsletters and check for online coupon codes before you buy, as well.

4. Shop yard sales and estate sales. Quite often people will purchase art supplies thinking they'll enjoy a particular craft. When they actually start the hobby they find they don't like it after all and have spent quite a bit of money for supplies they'll never use. You can often find some really good deals on art supplies like this.

5. Don't throw out the Sunday advertisements. Larger national chains will often place coupons in Sunday's papers because they know more people read newspapers during the weekend. Some coupons can be as much as 40% off a regularly priced item.

6. Make your own art supplies. You may be able to make art supplies cheaper than you can buy them. For example, make your own finger paint with unflavored gelatin, cornstarch, sugar, cold water, food coloring, and dishwashing liquid. Make your own modeling clay can be made with cornstarch, water, and baking soda. Search online for "homemade art supplies" and you'll come up with a number of websites offering recipes, often using materials you have in your kitchen cupboards.

Using an Affiliate Network: PepperJam Network

PJN Promo

You should be here at this blog as a result of learning how to make money as an artist through the internet. One of the great and yet to be mentioned techniques involves using your creativity and diversifying your offerings via an Affiliate Network

So for starters what is an affiliate network?

An affiliate network acts as an intermediary between publishers aka affiliates and merchants aka affiliate programs. It allows publishers to find affiliate programs, which are suitable for their websites and target audience for the mutual benefit of both parties.

In plain English, it means that you can place ads related to your content on your page and make money from traffic that originates from you and leads to a sale or action on the part of your referral.

Sign Up for Pepperjam Network and Get a $10 Sign On Bonus

Why PepperJam Network ?

In the course of the last year as Ive made my own transition from in house graphic Designer and fine artist Ive worked with many Affiliate programs and networks. What really makes PepperJam standout is the ease of use that their website entails. Most other networks have a very outdated and many times clumsy interface. The PepperJam site is very easy to use and intuitive. They also attract high quality merchants.
Great evidence of this is eBay's jump from CJ.com to PepperJam, eBay is HUGE affiliate program that is adaptable to any site, they are now a PepperJam exclusive!

How can I use PepperJam as an Artist to make money?

In this post I'll show you a simple example, lets assume you are a Graphic Designer, you of course have some sort of portfolio site to showcase your work, once you have proven your skills and have a customer satisfied why not continue to offer your services to them by offering a discounted Printing option through your page?

For example:

1000 business cards $39.95 24hr turnaround

That happens to be an amazing price that will blow away any local printers, you could directly recommend the site, send the link in a "thank you" email or just have a printing tab on your site, you will get a percentage of all sales made!

With a little creativity you could be working printing packages into all your design transactions.

Now as an added bonus, PepperJam Network will start your account off with a $10.00 bonus just for signing up through these special links, as long as your a new user, you will get a $10.00 registration bonus.

This is only the first post about PepperJam network, there are many of truly useful tools like the StoreBuilder that deserve further explanation

An excellent response: YA!

I want to make money from my art work, am I good enough and how would I do it?

I'm 15 so until August no-one will employ me and as I have now finished my GCSEs I've been drawing more than ever, so I wondered how do people go about making money from their artwork?

Firstly, am I good enough? If not, that's fine, say so, cos' if I'm rubbish it's best to find out now.

Secondly, how do I try to sell artwork?

Jonathan's Response

How to make money from selling art.

Other than what was said above...

Start going to art shows. Talk to other artist. Most importantly, tell them you would like to start selling your work and find out what is selling.

You will only sell what people are willing to buy. They will only buy what fills a need they have.

Here is where it gets interesting.

On a whim, I did some teeth. One was just a tooth actually. At the show, wouldn't you know that they both sold to dentist who said it is hard to get artwork for their offices.

So think of all the businesses, focus on just one, start creating.

Then move to the next.

Instead of thinking how you can sell your art, you need to think of how you can collect collectors.

If I sell 10 pieces at a show, I might make enough for a month or a year. If I collect 10 collectors from a show, I will be selling art to them for the rest of their or my life.

One collector would just about buy anything I made.

But first, start creating a body of work.

Also think of creating a blog. Post each work. Tell your inspiration. What the art is about. Why it didn't work if it didn't. Don't even think of making any money.

On my blog, I don't even have any ads. Not until I get to at least 100 visitors a day and probably not until 200. Right now, it is only in collecting visitors mode. It is collecting a following.

People love following people.

Once you start a following, you will be on your way. Then and only then will you start to think of selling.

Best wishes.

Jonathan, an artist among other things.

So your wondering how to make money with your art

So your wondering how to make money with your art?

1) Digitize your Portfolio

I will assume you have a good collection of finished pieces
and you have them digitally captured as a portfolio. These images are saved in .pdf format and .jpeg format.

If you dont have this done yet, It should be your highest priority, take shots with the best digital camera you can get your hands on and crop and edit the digital pictures. On smaller images do a direct scan. If you just cant handle taking photos yourself, try to recruit a student or friend who is a photographer, try using Craigslist to find or hire this person.

Your best bet for editing is Photoshop, but if you had that then that step would have been old news for you.

My recommendation,a program that I still use myself for quick edits, has a great image cataloger interface and easy edit features is Googles, Picasa Program. Its free, it incorporates directly to mail and has a web album and embeddable slideshow feature

Get it here: Picasa 3

2) Create a Web Presence:

You will need an online base of operations, I suggest multiple. So go ahead and get yourself a myspace account, a facebook account and a deviant art account. This is your minimum.

Join Myspace
Join Facebook
Join DeviantArt

No matter what you want these as promotional and networking tools, in short to get your art out there.

Be sure to give yourself the exact same username on each site, whether it is your own name or a business name that you create for yourself.

You really should have your own domain (a web address) i.e. www.yournameart.com , they cost 7.50 a year and will absolutely be the easiest way to tell people to look at your art, buy from your stores or see your next gallery showings.

I use GoDaddy for all my domain purchases:

Domain Sale! $7.49 .com at GoDaddy

Because of their 7.49 deal, setting up a domain is very easy.(the deal is only though partners like me, if you go to their page directly its 9.95)

There are a bunch more sites we will sign up for, but this will suffice for now.

So you now have a web presence, reserve the domain and forget about it for a little while. Focus on developing your free profiles, your artist, make them visually appealing, SIMPLE in Design, and make sure all of your art is posted. We will work on techniques, and do and dont's in later columns.

SO at this point people can find your art online contact you and request to purchase work or commission your skills, not nearly good enough and you will just be one of millions but your better off than most.

People like to pay online with respected processors, just sending you checks or money in the mail wont fly with most, and will totally remove the all important impulse buy.

So How do I get paid ?

Well your best bet is a Paypal account, its respected and you can get paid instantly.

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

With a Paypal account you will be able to place buy it now buttons near items you offer, or services you sell. You will also be able to invoice customers via email, including ones who work with offline.

Congratulations you now accept Credit cards! Now your twice as Professional as most of the artists out there, you can bring a laptop to any of your shows and directly charge customers on the spot.

What am I selling?

Good question, Personally I hate selling my originals and I rarely do it, so I sell prints instead, but if you really want to make a profit, think like the music industry, the money is in merchandise! At my shows I sell a couple of prints to art collectors, but the the major sales is T shirts, wall clocks, mousepads etc. (Those are my top sellers) that everybody (not just art collectors) have a desire for.

How:

Get a free POD account (Print on Demand) T- Shirt Store

Spreadshirt gives you a T shirt store with its own unique web address, remember to use the same username as all your other pages. Now you can link this store to all your pages and possibly get sales online, keep your prices low, dont get greedy.

I buy in bulk from myself at a discount then sell high in person at shows, $25 looks cheap for a t-shirt compared to a $500.00 painting!

You also want to be able to create and market merchandise like mousepads, clocks, posters etc. using the same type of service.

www.cafepress.com

You should now have 6 marketplaces/profiles with your works and items available for sale. All with the same name, so they can be easily googled by interested clients and word of mouth contacts.

This will be the end of this installment for now. Remember you are a business! Keep good organization of your sites, have a good professional contact email and check it regularly. Keep your art supply costs low! Try buying off of ebay , definitely get a dick blick catalog, cheapest retailer I have found so far, especially if you grab from the clearance collection.
